The Dawn of a New Golden Age?

Skloop: This is Boomer’s last post, not just on this site, but probably for anything in warfare. He handed it to me as is and told me I can do what I want. Since it seems done, I won’t touch it – it’s his work. Good-bye, Boomer. Thank you for all of the opportunities you gave me. Best of luck wherever you go in life. I hope you live a long and happy life. Remember to always be free and open minded.

Best wishes, my friend.

The Golden Ages. The name itself exudes an air of greatness, of success, and good times. For most of us, the Golden Ages are merely a piece of history. We were not there during the Golden Ages, to experience this peak in Club Penguin Warfare history. However many of us still look upon our army pasts and long for things to be as they were years ago. For years, it has been debated as to how to bring back the Golden Ages, or if it was even possible to do so. I was once at the forefront of those working towards a restoration in Club Penguin armies, hoping to bring back or rather to replicate the once-great era of our armies past. After nearly 3 years since I first joined Club Penguin Armies, I believe I am prepared to acknowledge the truth. We will never be able to bring back the Golden Ages. And yet, that is not to say we cannot create a new era of prosperity for Club Penguin Armies.

First, some history. The Golden Ages is a term used loosely to describe a period of prosperity in Club Penguin Armies. This era began shortly after the Color Wars, with the birth of organized armies. Army historians would place the date around mid-October 2006, at the start of the ACP/Romans conflict which would become WWII. From this period arose some of the great armies of the past: ACP, Romans, CPA, CPM, UMA, Nachos. The concept of armies began to gain momentum with the help of attention from Club Penguin bloggers. Perhaps the most important moment in this early rise was the introduction of the army know as UMA on the Club Penguin Cheats blog of Pink Mafias. As Pink’s blog gained popularity, so did UMA, who grew into one of Club Penguin Armies’ first Superpowers. Gaining over 200,000 hits between April and May 2007, UMA was an overwhelming force, now entering their peak during WWIII against ACP and later RPF. This period of constant warfare gained attention for the army community from the greater Club Penguin public. Everyone was familiar with ACP and UMA, and Oagalthorp and Pink Mafias were considered famous by Club Penguin standards. As the war began to wind down, other new but powerful armies began to thrive. The summer of 2007 saw the creation of the Golds, 2nd Generation Romans, Zippy500’s Nachos, IW, Silver Surfers, FW, and GPR. Both the Golds and GPR made strong, immediate impacts, while the Silver Surfers, despite being essentially just a clan, grew to large sizes, spreading their influence across Club Penguin. Other armies like ACP, UMA, RPF, and the Nachos continued to thrive in the post-war environment. Later on in the Fall of 2007, the last of the Golden Ages armies were created, among them: FGR, PRA, DW, WW, and BB. All of those armies grew into reasonably strong medium and near-major armies, with the exception of WW, which at the time was led by the all-powerful Club Penguin Cheats blogger Watex to incredible size. And the fact that nearly all of these armies of the Golden Ages remain in existence even now, over 3 years later, is remarkable as well as significant. But what was it that created this prosperity?

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

The Golden Ages are usually defined by 3 main components: Wars, Growth, and Fun. The first significant difference between modern times and the Golden Ages are the number of wars and general battles. The Golden Ages were full of real, long-lasting wars. WWII kicked off the Era of Armies in Club Penguin, followed by WWIII at the peak of the Golden Ages, along with other major wars, including the ACP/GPR War. There were conflicts and battles between the armies on a nearly daily basis, as many armies fought over Mammoth and the various other “Nations” Club Penguin servers were organized into at the time. These were real battles with real purpose, not staged practice battles like we have today. There was reason to fight, territory and bragging rights on the line, but yet the fun was still there. People enjoyed these battles as the focus of their time spent in armies. As chats became more common, the army community transitioned towards socialization as opposed to fighting, beginning the decline in army activity as we entered 2008. Army veterans all agree, these unscheduled yet real battles were something they always enjoyed, and something they sorely missed.

Next came the growth caused by the constant warfare. More armies were created, and all grew larger, giving soldiers an opportunity to join any number of successful armies. The thing that was great about this period was that nearly all of the armies were relatively close in size. This allowed for many evenly-matched wars that could last for weeks, even months. Alliances were formed during the wars, and only gave perhaps a slight edge to one side. Nowadays, alliances are formed at the start of wars to ensure the destruction of whichever army is the most hated at the time. For this reason, the wars rarely last beyond a week or two. The balance of power in Club Penguin Armies, the fact that soldiers were spread across any number of successful armies, is what allowed for the widespread growth of the army community, and the prosperous times that followed.

And lastly, the fun. I have touched on this in each of the other components as well. The Golden Ages were fun. People ask now, where has the fun gone? They all recall a time from the past where armies were more enjoyable than they are now. For some of us, it may just mean we have outgrown the army lifestyle. Others recognize that something has changed. Warfare is very selfish. And the soldiers and leaders alike are incredibly stubborn. We go to war for the wrong reasons, to destroy another army, or to seek revenge. Wars are no longer merely about proving who is better. When we enter wars, we often bring 3 other armies with us, in order to ensure victory. But where is the fun in that? We rarely see a one-on-one war anymore. And when we get a real war, or even just a battle for that matter, we refuse to admit defeat. We make up rules that never existed in the Golden Ages, like the supposed idea that once you claim 5 rooms, you have won the battle. We have adjusted warfare to match our selfishness, laziness, and all around refusal to lose. We have lost the simplicity of fighting a battle until the end. There is no need for judging if both sides fight until the one side has been thoroughly defeated. In this defeat, there is acceptance, and honor, that you have fought your hardest and lost. There is no bickering, no bitterness, only another battle to follow, another chance of redemption, another chance to prove you are the best there is. Fight honorably, with everything you have. Make sure your victories are well deserved, and your losses hard-fought. After all, armies were created to be fun. If they are no longer fun, we have done something wrong. It is not about winning or losing, but rather giving it everything you’ve got, fighting till the last, and enjoying every minute of a well-fought battle.

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

If you’ve made it this far in the post, you may be thinking to yourself, the Golden Ages sound pretty great. And you’d be right. There are elements of the Golden Ages which we all long for, elements which unfortunately, we can never have back. However, times change. What once was ideal, may not work anymore, and perhaps we have created new elements to warfare that are positive. Perhaps the term Golden Ages has taken on new meaning as well. If we look back at the prosperous armies of the past, we may admire them for their work ethic, their wars, and their legacies. But if we look more closely, we may realize that we have achieved things these armies of the past could not have dreamed of.

Consider the sizes we once considered to be “Major”. Armies in the past could make a significant impact with 10 soldiers at battles. Major armies were so titled when they had around 15 at battles. Yet in our modern times, we have as many as 12, maybe more armies that can achieve such size. We can fill the Top 10 with armies that can all break 20 soldiers on any given day. The Top 5 armies can achieve 30 soldiers, with NW pushing 50, and ACP breaking 100 at times. Perhaps the prosperity has returned? ACP, NW, IW, Nachos, UMA, TG, IV, RFW, WW, DW, DCP, AR. All 12 have proved able to reach 20 soldiers at battles. Armies like RT and RPF have reached close to 15 soldiers as well. We may, by Golden Ages standards, have as many as 14 Major Armies. We have as many as 10 armies that are close enough in size that they could fight an evenly-matched battle with any of the other armies. We’ve seen it in this tournament. There have been many very close battles, as well as upsets, because of just how close they are in size. This very much resembles the balance of power of the Golden Ages era. It allows for enormous potential for balanced, long-lasting wars, as well as tremendous potential for army growth across the Club Penguin Army Community. We have proved that our sizes are vastly superior to many of the large armies from the Golden Ages, and we have more large armies than at any other point in Club Penguin Army history. You could say that Club Penguin Armies are at an all-time high. So what’s to say this can’t be the next Golden Age?

The sizes are there. The potential is there. The rest is just waiting to be taken advantage of. We must start more real wars, both small and large, with balanced sides designed for long-lasting, enjoyable wars. We must fight our wars as they were meant to be fought. Fight with everything you have for as long as it takes. Don’t just fight for an hour, take your pictures, and leave. Make the battles mean something, find a purpose, your motivation, and stop at nothing until you succeed. If you give it everything you have, you will accept defeat knowing you tried your hardest, and your brilliant victories will be that much more satisfying. Battle by battle, we can restore the fun to Club Penguin Armies, and bring about the change we have been longing for, for over 3 years. If we can do this, we will have succeeded in creating our own Golden Age, whose legacy will be remembered throughout Club Penguin Armies for generations of soldiers to come.

  7. K, this is going to be a long comment…. I don’t get why people can’t give up the idea that the Golden Ages are coming back. I mean, who tries to bring back the American Industrial Revolution? Or who tries to bring back the 1950’s? Stuff like that. Just give it a rest, as some person said, idk who or where, ‘this is the dawn of a new era’. This is a new era in CP Armies, the ‘Socialization Era’. Accept it or deny it, it’s like the ‘Technology Age’ in real life. That wasn’t awfully long…. I could have made it longer. Khxbai.

  20. The major problem is people that would be willing to bring back the “fun” in armies. I do realize the majority of people would like to have fun when you are fighting on CP, but is it possible to destroy the habits that armies have fallen into?

1 vs 1 wars- When we do get a 1 vs 1 war, within about 5 minutes we seem to have every other army have a post choosing which side to fight on. Whether the two original armies involved seem to want them in it or not. Now, you get a war involving ACP, you get a dozen posts declaring war on ACP as well for b.s. reasons (i.e. “they’ve been number 1 for too long, it’s time for somebody else to take the throne) and then you get maybe 1 scheduled battle with ACP vs. every army on earth. Seriously, if a bunch of armies are going to fight one army at the same time, DO IT SEPARATELY. How great of an army are you if you need 7 other armies backing you up to fight a war? Not that great. How great of an army are you if you win a war that ended because the other side simply could not fight against your 7 armies backing you up? NOT THAT GREAT.

Going into a war with 5-10 armies at your side against a bigger army proves nothing but the idea that you, as an army, either are not capable or are not willing to fight on your own. If we are truly to have a new, somewhat different “Golden Age”, it needs to happen with armies fighting for themselves, not for some other armies’ cause that they don’t really care about but just joined in so they can say they beat ACP in a war, when realistically all you’ve done is help a war be as short as possible by pitching 100 armies against 1 army.

What does that prove, army leaders? You tell me that doing that proves something besides that you are not capable of fighting a bigger army. You can’t. Consider fighting for yourself, not other armies. Club Penguin armies were never made under the intention to create great alliances, to use all armies’ combined power to defeat one army. Armies were created to survive for themselves. To fight for themselves.

    • Good point. People think too much of alliances now, when back then, armies would turn on their “allies” in a heartbeat.

      Like

      • Example A of relying on alliances:

ACP vs IW war. It hasn’t even been going on for 5 days and each side has like 20 allies. It’s getting way too far out of hand.

        Like

        • IW would die on the first day if they didn’t have allies. It’s like having an unused airstrike signal in your pocket while you’re being eaten alive by zombies.

          Like

        • Ya of course the only reason why UMA didn’t win WWIII was because of ACP relying on allies.

          Like

          • Well, that was more strategical. The problem with these ally wars is that the armies are seeing fit to go and get 30 different armies to be allied with them so they have to do little to no work whatsoever. Having 1-3 allies with you? Not much of a problem. But 30? It’s just stupid.

  28. First off, who said you had to hate a leader just because their an enemy army? You can disagree with them decisions they make (COUGH VENDETTA AND NICK OF NW COUGH), but not hate them.

Second, we fail to see what we really want in these armies because we are so selfish, knowing we will not be harmed in our real life status by letting these outcomes be achieved. But the stake of fun is what is keeping us mainly behind. We want more fun, but we are doing it in a way that is wrong and is viewed as not right. We should be embracing the rules of the golden ages, and actually do that for once, instead of siding with one story, or other… Don’t put yourself where you don’t belong sometimes. If one person does something you do not like, them better off leave them.

ACP at number 1 every week, NW at number 2,and Nachos at number 3,IW at number 4.All great armies but no one could take any of these 4 armies alone except if they were to team up. Back in the day you had different changes every week with Nachos and ACP fighting at number 1 or RPF,UMA,ACP all tieing for number 1. It just isnt the same since ACP pretty much dominates EVERYONE.
